Wisp Cores: Weapon Agnostic Creature Skills System (inspired by Nioh, themed after Ori)

Currently, combat skills (Runes) are tied to specific weapons. so if you want to use a heavy 2H hammer or sword, you are locked into the abilities slotted into these specific weapons, if you swap weapons, your entire utility and kit changes

We need a secondary skill system that is weapon (and with 1.0 coming also class) agnostic, and since it’s a arpg, also farmable with a crafting system, so that it deepens buildcrafting, similar to Nioh’s Soul Cores, but themed around Moon’s DNA: Wisps from Ori

Concept: “Wisp Cores”

When defeating mobs, they have a chance to drop Tainted Wisp Cores., you identify them at a Whisper checkpoint, if you die before identifying them, they disapear, when identified, each have random mods, and the skill it provides is unique and themed around the creature it came from

You start with 1 slot, you’ll have to unlock more by spending a Plague Ichor, for a max of 4 slots

To avoid power creep, when using a Wisp Core ability, you can’t gain focus for few seconds

Likewise, when using a Rune skill, you can’t cain’t the resource used for Wisp Core abilities, that resource could be “Resonance”, wich fits both the theme and the balance

The skills would be split in two category: Offense / Utility

So you can only equip 2 offense cores max and 2 utility cores max

One major problem to solve would be how it fits into the current input scheme

As far as I know, the runes sold by Ilaria are weapon agonstic.

The point is a set that survives weapon swap / change, something that lives with the character

If you change weapons you change runes set, and if you want weapon agnostic set, you have to duplicate them, wich removes choice

Interesting, this sounds like a completely unique sub-class system or a type of mechanic for classes such as Shamans / Spirit-binders / Beast-Masters.

It kind of sounds like you are essentially siphoning the essence (or spirit) of defeated enemies to channel their power directly through your character?

Your idea, Is it only active abilities or only passives or is it a mix of an active ability that also features a passive either tied to the activation of the ability or a passive that always stays on?
